But Greeks could not have been less happy with the pending austerity, as they gathered in the centre of Athens on the second day of a general strike. Protestors threw stones at police, smashed windows and set fire to property. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Clashes continued overnight. Dozens of police and protestors were injured, while many demonstrators were detained.

The African Union has condemned France for supplying weapons to Libyan rebels. Its chief said the move threatens to put the entire region at risk. On Wednesday, France became the first NATO country to openly admit to arming tribal fighters, who are striving to topple Colonel Gaddafi. Rebels have recently been making gains and hope to advance on Tripoli. John Laughland, from the Institute of Democracy and Co-operation in Paris says France's action reveals the true colours of NATO's efforts in Libya.

The world's longest bridge over sea water has opened in opened to general traffic on in China's eastern coastal city of Qingdao. Jiaozhou Bay is located on the southern coast of the Shandong Peninsula in East China. It separates Huangdao District from Qingdao City and borders on two other cities, Jiaozhou and Jiaonan. The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, with a total length of 42.4 kilometres would easily cross the English Channel and is almost three miles longer than the previous record-holder, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in the American state of Louisiana. Built in just four years at a cost of 55.5 billion pounds, the sheer scale of the bridge reveals the advances made by Chinese engineers in recent years.

Well, it's not only Greece that's seeing mass civil unrest. In the UK around three quarters of a million public sector workers are set to protest against government plans to change their pensions, and freeze pay. Many schools will be closed, and transport is likely to be severely affected, as workers embark on a one day strike. RT's Laura Emmett listened to the voices of frustration.

Greeks are now facing 28 billion Euro in cuts, to be implemented over the next five years. EU officials have welcomed the plan, saying it will help the country get back onto a path of recovery.
